U.S. Department of Commerce to Join With White House and Federal Communications Commission for July 19 Observance of 20th Anniversary of Americans With Disabilities Act

The U.S. Department of Commerce, in partnership with the White House and the Federal Communications Commission, will host an event Monday, July 19, to commemorate and celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and to highlight technologies developed to empower the daily lives of Americans with disabilities.

A technology showcase is scheduled from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in the main foyer of the Commerce Department, where exhibitors have been invited to demonstrate their technologies.

From 1 p.m.- 2.p.m., a program in Commerce’s Auditorium will include the launch of the FCC’s new Accessibility and Innovation Forum, presentation of an original video chronicling personal histories about the impact of technology on the lives of people with disabilities, a performance by Gallaudet University students and a reception.  Both the showcase and the program are free and open to the public.

Sign language-interpreters and computer-aided, real-time transcription (CART) will be provided.  Other accommodations for people with disabilities are available upon request.  Include a description of the accommodation you will need and tell us how to contact you if we need more information.  Make your request no later than Friday, July 16, 2010.  Send an e-mail to fcc504[at]fcc[dot]gov or call the Consumer & Governmental Affairs Bureau at 202-418-0530 (voice), 202-418-0432 (TTY).
