U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke Statement on Release of January 2010 U.S. International Trade in Goods and Services Report

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke issued the following statement on the release of the January 2010 U.S. International Trade in Goods and Services report by the Commerce Department’s U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Today’s report showed that U.S. exports in January 2010 decreased by 0.3 percent to $142.7 billion since December 2009. Imports in January decreased 1.7 percent over December to $180.0 billion.

“Exports have grown rapidly for almost a year and we are seeing a resurgence of manufacturing activity," Locke said. “President Obama’s National Export Initiative, aimed at boosting the sale of U.S. goods and services abroad, will strengthen the manufacturing and service sectors and create more American jobs.”

Obama announced the National Export Initiative during his State of the Union address, and a few weeks later, Locke detailed the plan, which includes significant new resources for promoting U.S. goods and services in markets abroad.
