Statement from Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on Today's World Trade Organization RulingIn findings announced today, a dispute settlement panel at the World Trade Organization ruled in favor of the United States on a case claiming that launch aid and other subsidies provided by European countries to the Airbus aircraft company over the last four decades caused adverse effects to the interests of U.S. businesses and workers. Below is a statement from U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on today’s ruling.
“Today’s WTO decision marks a victory for the United States and for American workers at the tens of thousands of small- and medium-sized companies that produce components for Boeing’s jetliners. No industry supports more U.S. jobs through exporting than American aerospace manufacturing.
“The decision acknowledges that distortive government subsidies should have no place in the global marketplace. I commend Ambassador Kirk for fighting hard to ensure a level playing field for U.S. companies. Together, USTR’s vigorous trade enforcement efforts and the Commerce Department’s aggressive push to sell American products and services around the world will help us reach President Obama’s goal of doubling exports in five years and supporting two million new jobs.”
